Bird Flu: What It Means for Your Dog

Hi Reader,

First off, I just want to say thank you. I received so many thoughtful and inspiring emails from all of you in response to my last email. It’s easy to feel like you’re shouting into the void when speaking out against oppression, but your support reminded me that we’re in this together.

Now, onto something important: bird flu and your dogs.

If you’ve been watching the news, you might have noticed how little information is available. That’s not an accident.

The Trump Administration has been quietly deleting scientific data, removing entire pages from government websites like the CDC, and restricting federal workers from sharing public health information.

Meanwhile, New York City has increased its bird flu surveillance in hospitals by testing for subtypes of Flu A and the UK and European Union ordered "prepandemic" vaccines for their citizens. These are indicators that the concern for bird flu becoming transmitted between humans is growing.

And here’s something almost no one is talking about: dogs can be infected with bird flu.

This doesn’t mean your dog can’t go outside or that you need to panic—but it's important to understand what can put your dog at risk. Just like with any other health risk, a few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping our pets safe.

I spent a lot of time researching this and put together practical tips to help. My blog post also includes a list of trusted sources, so you can see the data for yourself and explore them in more detail if you want:

Stay safe, stay informed, and give your pups an extra cuddle for me.

Take care,

P.S. Make sure you update your dog's microchip if it was registered with Save This Life because they suddenly shut down this month!

Learning Portal Login | Instagram | Blog | Shop Hey Reader, I’ve been quiet lately, and I want to share why. My senior pup, Finnick, had health issues for a long while. I’d been managing them as best I could, but he declined quickly in May. I spent the last stretch of his life with my family, focused on comfort, connection, and saying goodbye. When he passed away, I took bereavement leave—and it’s been a hard, tender time. Finn was more than just my dog. He was my companion through so many...

Learning Portal Login | Instagram | Blog | Shop Hi Reader, You might remember I emailed recently about SB1234 — the bill to update Arizona’s outdated animal cruelty laws. Thanks to public pressure, that bill has been given a second chance... but it’s still stuck. Now it’s called SB1658, and it’s waiting for a vote in the House. It’s time to push this over the finish line. SB1658, a bill that would establish bare minimum standards of care for pets, is currently stalled in the Arizona House....

Hey Reader, I know it feels early to talk about fireworks, but trust me—now is the time to start getting ready. Every year around the 4th of July in the United States, shelters fill up with pets who panicked and bolted during fireworks. I’ve seen it myself as a former animal shelter worker—dogs breaking through fences, crashing through windows, even escaping crates. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s often preventable. If your pet has ever shown fear during storms, loud trucks passing, or...
